Who wants to help me pick out eyeglass frames? You? Oh, I hope it's you.

I had perfect vision. Had. Then one day, not long ago, I couldn't read the directions on a box of…something. (My memory is also failing me.) A few weeks later, I couldn't tell whether the shampoo I was considering contained sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate. (Important!) I noticed a deep vertical furrow running between my eyebrows, which became deeper (and weirdly achy) after every computer session. I had to hold takeout menus at arm's length. Then my arms were not long enough.

I saw the fuzzy writing on the wall. I am Aged now, and require reading glasses. So be it. After a trip to the eye doctor and a tour through the expensive eyeglass choices on display, I skipped over to the drugstore and purchased the only pair that wasn't studded with rhinestones or cartoon characters. They are not hideous, but I could do better.

When Rivet & Sway offered me a pair of reading glasses, damn right I was going to take them up on it. I had a hard time choosing from their selections, as their choices were uniformly cute and unspangled and very few of them, if any, sported tiny Winnie the Poohs in the corners. They all look good to me. Fortunately Rivet and Sway offers the services of Ritzy, the Personal Stylist With the Best Name, to help you choose pairs.

Here are the frames she picked for me. I like them all, frankly, although I secretly have a favorite. What do you think?

(I took pictures with my computer camera, and included some staged photos of what I look like while I'm working. I aim to Entertain as well as Inform.)

First: we have the Faster, Pussycat!, in Jet Black.

faster, pussycat

Turns out that one of my ears is higher than the other. Fortunately I am filled with self-acceptance. Stop laughing at me!

fp, chocolate

Chocolate helps the brain.

faster pussycat, peering

Wait, how do I make the camera take a pic… oh.

Next: the Ruby Red, in Heart Throb.

ruby red

This is not a face I make while working, ever.

ruby red, shocked

My deadline was when?

Finally: the Je Ne Sais Quoi, in Water Lily.

je ne sais quoi

Blue! I like blue.

jnsq, dumb

Sometimes I stick my tongue out while thinking, as if I were a kitty cat.

je ne sais quoi, sliding

This is the face I make when Scott tells me I'm pretty. And then I slide out of the frame.

je ne sais quoi, laffing

I am a great wit!

Weigh in. I know you have opinions.

Rivet & Sway is hosting a Super Mom Contest for Mother's Day. To enter? Share a short story (250-500 characters) of a super mom in your life by going here. I really really like the last pair, me me said quoi. The blue looks really pretty with your eyes (and that shirt!)

Ruby Reds!

Ruby Red, I guess...though I also had a hard time differentiating from Faster...
and don't feel bad...I have more cartilage behind my right ear, so I always have to get my glasses bent/adjusted to accommodate that.

The second one

Get two! Jen says what? and Ruby Red! That way you can look styling in two colors and you can show off different sides of the same cool woman!

I love the Je Ne Se Quoi and the Ruby Red. I think the extra blue bit on the former really takes it up a level or so, though, so I'd go with that one.

I like the Ruby Red style best, but I LOVE the Water Lily color... I'd go for the blue.

You look the cutest in Je Ne Sais Quoi.

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTracy

I'd go with the Je Ne Sais Quoi you heartbreaker.

Am I too late to the voting party? Je Ne Sais Quois 100%. (Ruby Red, like 70%.)

Ruby Red! The color brings out your eyes.

May 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLindsay

Ruby Red for sure!

Water Lilies.
Full disclosure: I am a sucker for blue, anything French, and Monet.
Nonetheless, I maintain that this style makes you look literary AND artistic,
both worthy of this eminently enjoyable blog.

Je Ne Sais Quoi, in Water Lily! My ears are uneven too. In fact my whole head is, my Dad says I looked like a comma when I was born.

Oooh, the Ruby Red!

Because I know that my opinion is the most important of all the opinions, I feel it is my duty to tell you that I like the middle pair the best. The blue ones are my second choice. You're welcome. ;)

If you find a nice optometrist, they'll adjust the arms for you so they sit more even.

Ruby red.

They fall in line with your eyebrow and when you smile do not rest on your cheeks. I'd have like to have seen a side view to see if the arms are the correct length, but trust the R & S folks to have steered you correctly in that regard.

While I love the blue, especially with your natural hair color, they miss key glasses criteria. For me. But if you love 'em. Get 'em. We're just dorks from the Internet. :-)

I can walk into an eyeglass shop and pick the four best glasses for someone in minutes. It's an odd skill. Wish it paid more than bubkus.

LOVE LOVE LOVE the Ruby Red glasses!!! They look great on you!

No contest, Alice! Ruby Red! Ruby Rrreeeedddd! They look custom-made for your face. Very lovely, face & glasses.

May 4, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAudrey

The Ruby Red frames fit your face perfectly and look great on you. I think the first pair is too small, and the last pair fits fine but isn't terribly flattering.

I have spent A LOT of time at the Warby Parker showroom recently. Buying eyeglasses that fit/flatter is even harder than buying bras.

The blue are pretty and hip and really pop in the photo maybe because of your blue shirt. But I like the Ruby Red best and think they would be the most versatile with whatever occasion you'd be wearing them. They don't look that red to me - just a larger, better fitting dark frame than the first pair (I had a good laugh at the commenter who suggested you crush those under ur boot. Funny, funny people!)

You're lovely, Alice!

May 6, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJen

They all look wonderful on you because of your face and stuff.

If a gun were put to my head to decide, I'd say Ruby Red (but can you get them in blue?).
