Seven years!

As of tomorrow, I'll have been writing this blog for seven years. My blog's a first-grader! When I began writing here, Henry was sixteen months old; now he's shaving. (Well, he could shave. His legs, anyway. Kid's got some hairy legs.)

Here's a visual, to help you cry. My baby then:

shirtless

And now:

He wanted me to sled.

I know.

Before I start looking at more pictures of my son as an adorable toddler and spend the rest of the afternoon bawling on the couch, I wanted to say thank you. The last seven years have been action-packed, in both excellent and terrible ways, and through it all you've supported me, cheered me on, and given me a kick in the ass when I needed it. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

According to my stats there are many of you who read and never comment. Which is fine, but today, please say hello! Tell me who you are, what brought you to Finslippy, what you're up to, what your favorite cheese is--whatever. I really don't care. I mean, I care, but I'm not going to demand you tell me your life story. But I would welcome hearing your life story! If you felt like writing it. I'll stop now.

As a reward for commenting, you'll be in the running to receive a copy of my friend Jessie Sholl's new book, Dirty Secret. I wrote about Jessie's book on my Redbook blog, but I wanted to do a giveaway here. Dirty Secret is Jessie's story of growing up with a mom who's a hoarder, and it's a doozie of a book. (And yes, I did just write the word "doozie." I couldn't decide between that and "humdinger.") It's funny and harrowing and ultimately uplifting. You will enjoy it! So comment, and a week from today I'll announce the winner.

Since you asked SO nicely, Hi! I'm Crystal and I've been reading you and following on twitter (more recently) a couple of years. Followed you over from another blog at some point. Loved your wit and humor and have been hanging around ever since! I love reading people's blogs but have zero desire to start one, which is rare, I know! I think Gouda is my favorite cheese but since I am trying to eat a little more paleo and you are cutting back, we better stay away from that subject! I recently jumped on the Crossfit bandwagon and wow, has that made all the difference! Because of that, your post yesterday had me nodding along and amen-ing all over the place. Congrats to us for changing our own perceptions!

You got me! I don't comment! Sorry sorry sorry- darn that google reader and my click-through laziness!
Anyway, baby Henry is just about the cutest thing in the entire world. Kid Henry is cute too, but has lost the kissable pink cheeks. Why must they grow up? WHY??!!

Happy Blog Anniversary!

(PS LIfe story, from Oregon, moved to Idaho, then out to NYC a few months ago. Two boys, stay at home, don't know anyone here yet so just play boy things and stare at my computer during naps! The end! :) )

Hi I'm Jilly - I never comment but I have been reading you for years and my favorite cheese is camembert. No life story yet, delurking is a process you know.

I've been reading so long I can't remember how I found you either. Maybe Dooce? Fussy? I have no idea, but your blog has been one of my favorites for as long as I've been a blog-addicted lurker. I love too many cheeses to pick a favorite. My favorite post of yours though, probably has to be the Minty Bear saga. Happy birthday! Thank you for writing!

January 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJill

I never comment on blogs but just wanted to say hi. My favorite post is still the birth story. :)
My favorite cheese is grilled.

January 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJulia

I've been reading for a couple of years...got here through either Chookooloonks or Fussy, can't remember which. Yay for your 7 year anniversary! :)

Congrats! A friend sent me the link to the first "Farewell to Minty Bear" post and I've loved you ever since. And I'll take any and all cheese. Hmm, well not so much with the plastic wrapped cheese slices. But otherwise I say yuuuuummmm!

Hi there! I think I have commented before a loooooOoooong time ago. I don't know if I have a favorite cheese, per se, but I do enjoy bleu cheese a whole heckuva lot when it is sprinkled on top of an apple walnut salad.

Love your blog!

Hi there! Delurking as requested. I think I found your blog through One Good Thing, back when flea was still writing there. I don't have kids (and apparently I'm kind of infertile, which is a whole other story) but really enjoy your stories and thoughts on parenting.

January 26, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterthistle

I've been coming here for years. I don't remember why. I come BACK because you make me laugh, and now that I have a son of my own I can definitely relate.

January 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAlana

happy blog beginning! The first blogpost of yours that I ever read was about you at a party telling a supermodel about how you're not supposed to wash your vagina with soap. (Or something like that. How did I find it? I can't remember, but I promise I wasn't googling anything weird...) I laughed so hard and have spent many more hours at your blog since, laughing and crying and loving it all. Thanks for sharing your life--you've got a wonderful way with words!

Happy (blog) Birthday. Your boy is quite lovely. I wouldn't call it my life story but I write about my life (and my boy) myself: http://sassafrasmama.blogspot.com/

Sorry to be lurking so long. I think I got here from Dooce...momversation. I've read all your archives and love your blog. Henry is adorable yesterday and today. I love cheese, but only the boring ones like cheddar and mozzarella, parmesan and provalone. Hate cottage cheese. And mayo, mustard, sour cream, ranch dressing...basically ketchup is the only condiment I will eat! Guess i am a four year old child. Congrats on the beautiful hair, mine is long and blonde and will be until the day I die:)

Thanks so much, Alice, for sharing with us your life and your family. Been reading you now for 4 years and always glad to see a new post from finslippy come up in my reader. I went through all of my blogs and deleted almost everything except news feeds...and you! Keep writing and we'll keep reading.

Happy Anniversary!

January 26, 2011 | Unregistered Commenteramy

Happy Birthday to Finslippy! I've been reading for a couple of years, and as soon as I found you (through Looky, Daddy!, if I remember correctly), you became one of my favorite bloggers to read. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences with us - you are such a great writer, and I always leave your posts with either something to ponder, or a smile on my face.

And hoarders fascinate me, so I'd love to read your friend's book!

I don't remember how I found your blog, I've been reading it for maybe 4 years (I don't know for sure), I love your voice and your writing so I'm always happy to see that you've got a new post, my favorite cheese would be one called 'Corsica' at the local cheese shop, but that's probably not it's real name. It's really tasty.

January 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTamara

Have been following for a few years, having found your through Dooce. I really enjoy your voice and how much you remind me of my older sister (before she fell down the "i've married an idiot" trap door and into an alternate reality). She always had a fun look on the bitter realities of life, whether I agreed with her or not. Thank you for reminding me of better days :)

January 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBrooke

I found your blog a few years ago when a friend recommended it on a parenting website that I frequent.

January 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJaime

I read often, and comment rarely. I can't remember how I found your blog originally - yours was one of the first that I started reading. But I do know I have found many other blogs that I really enjoy through yours. Congratulations on 7 years!

Hi. I'm Marie. I'm a Lurker.

I will do this for you, Alice. Just for you. Delurking when it's not even Delurking Day?!?!?! Oh, the introvert in me is all squeamish inside..and sweating. I think I need a several-step program for this.

We love you; we all love you. You're wonderful words make us want YOU to be a type of cheese.

Other commenters are so clever. Clamming up now. Happy Blogiversary!

Hi, I've been reading you since I don't know when, and don't know how I found you, but am glad I did. I have no kids by choice, but adore everyone else's and love reading about yours. (I develop educational iPhone games for kids so I guess it's an occupational hazard...) Anyway, keep on keepin on and I'll keep reading!

January 26, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterinimitablej

Happy Blog Anniversary! I can't remember why I started reading, but it has been years and years - and I do believe that this is my first ever comment. I read you because you are smart and funny and real. Girlfriend material, you know?

January 26, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterjenna

Hi! I've been reading your blog for a few years, so long that I'm not sure how I got here but I've been enjoying your wit ever since:)

January 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRenee

Hi Alice, regular reader/never commenter here. I've been reading your blog for years and years. I have no recollection of how I found you, but probably from dooce. I live in Oswego, Illinois and am a SAHM.
