Seven years!
Here's a visual, to help you cry. My baby then:
And now:
I know.
Before I start looking at more pictures of my son as an adorable toddler and spend the rest of the afternoon bawling on the couch, I wanted to say thank you. The last seven years have been action-packed, in both excellent and terrible ways, and through it all you've supported me, cheered me on, and given me a kick in the ass when I needed it. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
According to my stats there are many of you who read and never comment. Which is fine, but today, please say hello! Tell me who you are, what brought you to Finslippy, what you're up to, what your favorite cheese is--whatever. I really don't care. I mean, I care, but I'm not going to demand you tell me your life story. But I would welcome hearing your life story! If you felt like writing it. I'll stop now.
As a reward for commenting, you'll be in the running to receive a copy of my friend Jessie Sholl's new book, Dirty Secret. I wrote about Jessie's book on my Redbook blog, but I wanted to do a giveaway here. Dirty Secret is Jessie's story of growing up with a mom who's a hoarder, and it's a doozie of a book. (And yes, I did just write the word "doozie." I couldn't decide between that and "humdinger.") It's funny and harrowing and ultimately uplifting. You will enjoy it! So comment, and a week from today I'll announce the winner.

Reader Comments (946)
Hi.
:)
Also, I want you to know I decided to comment before I read the paragraph about being entered to win that book.
...Not that I don't want to win it...
:)
Congrats on your blog's seventh birthday! They grow up so fast...
I have a two-year-old Henry and I've been reading you for...five years? I love some good seaside cheddar, let me tell you.
I don't remember how i found your blog. Yeah, I'm usually too shy to comment... but here I am doing it to wish you a happy birthblogday!
I think you're a brilliant and f-u-n-n-y writer. :-)
Oh, and cumin-flavored Gouda (or is it caraway? anyway, flavor bits!)
Yours was one of the first blogs I started reading years ago, back when I first found something funny on the internet and then went back the next day to read it again and, lo, IT HAD CHANGED! THERE WAS NEW FUNNY! OH, HAPPY DAY.
So, yes. I've been reading your lovely words for quite some time and it's entirely possible that I've never commented. Not once. Oh, dear. I need to stop thinking about this now, because...the shame. The murky black shame.
Thanks so much for writing for us, all these years.
Long time lurker popping out at your behest to say thank you so, so much for your blog.
I don't remember how I found you, or when. 3 years ago maybe? 4? I think I've only commented once before (when i found your beautiful piece published in The Sun), but I enjoy all the time! Thanks for keepin' it real. Congrats on 7!
I don't remember how I ended up here. I don't even have kids. I enjoy reading about motherly travails, I guess...and yours are especially entertaining.
I am a non-commenter commenting for the first time. I really can't remember how I found your blog, but I love reading it! I love your humor!
I've been reading for a little over 2 years now - I just love your blog, but I'm bad at commenting on anything (introvert IRL, introvert online!). I think I found your blog through Dooce, but I'm not really sure. I'm currently working at a not very fun job and applying to grad schools. I got married 7 months ago, and we just got 2 puppies (chi-weenies! so cute! so small! such sharp teeth!). I am an equal-opportunity cheese lover, though my favorites are brie and goat cheese.
Happy Blog Birthday!
I have been reading for several years (maybe since 2006-ish? Which is about when I started blogging and became sucked into the whole world inside the computer), and I don't even know how I found you. Probably through Heather, the gateway drug of blogs. And I just think you're delightful. Also a fellow New Yorker, holla! (We won't mention that unfortunate detour to the suburbs -- of which, by the way, I remind myself every time I catch myself thinking, "Maybe we really need a yard...").
Picking a favorite cheese would be like picking a favorite child.
OK I am a reader who doesn't comment. Why? I'm not specifically interested in parenting, or most of the stuff you write about, but your style and voice are just so good and you have such a funny sense of humor that you can make it interesting; I suspect you could make any subject interesting.
I found you through Dooce a few years ago. I'm a committed lurker with no blog, so if you want to hear my life story, you have to come to San Antonio. (It's a beautiful city! And no snow!) And when you wrote about Jessie's book, I immediately downloaded it to Kindle and loved it, so no need to enter me to win. (See how I'm commenting just because you asked and with no mercenary interest?)
P.S. Loved your SOTU tweets last night.
Happy blogaversary! Long time reader, but I don't think I ever posted before. When my daughter was born nearly four years ago I needed some parenting things to read that made me feel better about all the *stuff* that moms have to put up with, and made me laugh. Yours is one of the best for that--thanks!
I'm pretty sure I found your blog through Google Reader. It was (and likely still is) a suggested site for those of us we enjoy Dooce. :)
Wow, I didn't know anyone had been blogging for seven years -- you were truly an early adopter!
Congrats on seven years! I think I found you through Dooce, and your blog has become one of the very few I check daily (and am sorely disappointed when there's no new post, but no pressure!). I love your writing, your sense of humor, and your style. About me: I am a master procrastinator, as evidenced by the fact that I'm posting here when I should be working. My favorite cheese changes so I can't really tell you what it is, but while I do love cheese, I think I may love avocados more. I don't know . . . maybe it's a tie. But anyway, I'd really love to read that book!
Hello! Long-time quiet reader over here, but since you demanded comment, here it is! I am Sarah. My Internet browser, Safari, brought me to Finslippy. I'm currently watching Dinosaur Train with my Henry (who is still a toddler btw - wanna borrow him sometime? He's neat). My favorite cheese is any cheese of a stinky variety.
I think I found you through Catherine Newman, one of my other favorite mommy bloggers. I love your writing and have a 7 year old son who is also a legos and Star Wars addict like Henry. Sorry I always lurk and never comment!
Congrats! I think I've been reading for about 5 or 6 of those years. Can't remember how I found you, but I do know it was one of the very first blogs I started to read.
Asiago or brie.
Thanks for lots of great reads.
I've been following your blof for at least a year, possibly two. I came on recommendation of dooce or mighty girl, can't remember which! And I've stayed to enjoy stories of your family and challenges different from my own. Thanks!
hi! i clicked over from suburban bliss at some point, and i am pretty sure i clicked around for a while and laughed so hard i teared up at work (lovely!). something about mooing in labor maybe? anyway, i read a bunch of your archives and like to keep up to date, though i never comment. oh, and i would have to say my favorite cheese is Parmesan. i can't buy the fancy big blocks at costco because i would eat the WHOLE THING in 2 days. when i was single and ate trader joe's ravioli covered in parm every day, i would go through one of those kraft tubs A WEEK!?!? crazy, right?!!
I came from suburban bliss, back in 2005, and I've been reading ever since!
Must say, love the iPad, not so much the typos (blof?!?!?), and auto spell correct! Apologies all around!
I've been reading your blog for a long time now, maybe three years? But I never comment because I am incurably shy. And because you have so many it doesn't ever seem like there is something even remotely interesting I could add.
But your posts always make my day. My favourite cheese is gorgonzola. I like to read pretentious novels and post photos of my dog on the Internet.
That is all.
Happy Seven Year Anniversary!!
Congrats on 7 years! I don't know exactly what lead me to your blog; I am guilting of reading blogs at work for ridiculous amounts of time. One blog usually leads to another blog, and voila! I have added yet another one to my list. I have an 8 month old son after struggling with infertility, and I work in HR. That is my earth-shattering story!
I don't remember how I found you. I think referred from mightygirl, or dooce or someone else. I've been reading for years but don't usually comment. My only comment is always 'I can't comment. I'm not as funny as she is'. Kids do grow up way too fast, I think when I started reading you, my first daughter was only 3 or 4, now she's 8 and the 2nd kid is 3 already. It's pure blissful insanity.
