Seven years!

As of tomorrow, I'll have been writing this blog for seven years. My blog's a first-grader! When I began writing here, Henry was sixteen months old; now he's shaving. (Well, he could shave. His legs, anyway. Kid's got some hairy legs.)

Here's a visual, to help you cry. My baby then:

shirtless

And now:

He wanted me to sled.

I know.

Before I start looking at more pictures of my son as an adorable toddler and spend the rest of the afternoon bawling on the couch, I wanted to say thank you. The last seven years have been action-packed, in both excellent and terrible ways, and through it all you've supported me, cheered me on, and given me a kick in the ass when I needed it. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

According to my stats there are many of you who read and never comment. Which is fine, but today, please say hello! Tell me who you are, what brought you to Finslippy, what you're up to, what your favorite cheese is--whatever. I really don't care. I mean, I care, but I'm not going to demand you tell me your life story. But I would welcome hearing your life story! If you felt like writing it. I'll stop now.

As a reward for commenting, you'll be in the running to receive a copy of my friend Jessie Sholl's new book, Dirty Secret. I wrote about Jessie's book on my Redbook blog, but I wanted to do a giveaway here. Dirty Secret is Jessie's story of growing up with a mom who's a hoarder, and it's a doozie of a book. (And yes, I did just write the word "doozie." I couldn't decide between that and "humdinger.") It's funny and harrowing and ultimately uplifting. You will enjoy it! So comment, and a week from today I'll announce the winner.

Reader Comments (946)

Hello! I read each and every word *twice* because you write beautifully and you are hilarious!

However, I think I comment approximately once every 2.5 years.

I can't remember how I found your blog but it was one of the very first ones I ever read. I devoured every word - I was a first time SAHM living in small community and was so very lonely.

I felt like I had found a friend and you were telling me that everything would be OK. Yep, you were right - everything is splendid!

Also - my favourite cheese is a Mango & Ginger Stilton - yum!

Happy Birthday Finslippy! You are the best writer out there.

You have an adorable son, both then and now! I am also a "never commenting" person, but will answer your request today. I think I initially got directed to you from amalah's site? Not sure its been so long. I'm up to, well avoiding work, that's pretty much it...but about to head out to pick up pizza for office lunch, so that's remotely exciting? Right?

Oh and my current favorite cheese is probably extra sharp cheddar. Just had cheese, crakers and wine for dinner last night. Dinner of champions!

I must have been reading you almost from the beginning. I found your blog through Fluid Pudding. I love WeeBrie especially and most other cheese, except smoked anything.

Can't remember when or how I found your blog but have been a fan ever since. Thanks for the years of entertainment. I know how you feel, I can't look at baby and toddler pictures of my boys without feeling like time has flown by these last 8 years!

I read every day and my 7-year blog anniversary is on Thursday! So I'm a first grader too! I only have 50 subscribers though - but that's okay!

I'm Becky from Columbus, Ohio. I've commented once in the past 5 years that I've checked your blog daily. I just think you're awesome. That is all.

Alice - I don't think I've been aware of blogs for 7 years, so I am twice as impressed you've been writing this for that long! Thank you for keeping me entertained/interested for the ~2 years I've been following you. Having moved overseas a few years ago, your blog (as well as others) give me a connection to a world I understand better than the one I am in. It also gives me insight into a world I hope to become part of soon, that of being a mother.

Thanks again!

I'm de-lurking today to. Happy blog birthday!

Generally speaking I just like cheese. Runny, stinky, string or cubed. I do not however like cheese product, notably Velveeta & Kraft Singles. I also love your blog - I hope you continue for many more years!

Happy Blog Birthday! I've been following for a few years, I found you while searching for like souls who had suffered a miscarriage. I had just went through one and was in need of reading how others had gotten through it. Your entries in the days following yours helped tremendously. I've always wanted to thank you for that!

I linked from another blog to yours around five years ago. The post was a memo you found to Henry about crazy toddler behavior. It was hilarious, I stayed. :) Thank you!

I'm not sure if I've ever commented before, but I life feta... so I thought it deserved to be recognized.

I think you're really funny and I enjoy reading your blog.

Congrats on seven years of great writing. You and I have been friends almost that long--you're just not aware of it. I originally came here from Dooce, I believe. I think you rock.

Hello from Barbara from Holland, who's been reading Finslippy for almost four years, ever since she saw a post on dooce.com with lots of lovely ladies kicking FOO on a porch. My favorite cheese is queijo fresco, a Portuguese divine invention, but tomorrow it may be Danish blue, who knows. I'm mysterious that way.

Congratulations! And I may say from a 5-year lurker, thank YOU for sharing your life. With two boys, 11 & 13, I can relate to your wonderful stories. Your honesty and openness is very inspiring!

Provolone all the way!

My name is Maureen, but you can call me Mo. I arrived here via Momversation and follow you because I find you entertaining and witty. My favorite cheese is gorgonzola. The stinkier the better. I also love books bit you didn't ask that did you?

I can't remember how long I've been reading, or exactly how I found you, but it has been years. I do remember the first post of yours I read - it was about the dangers of self-diagnosing through google, and I laughed so hard I cried. I've been a devoted, but silent, follower ever since. Happy anniversary!

Your blog was recommended to me when I was on maternity leave. That was five years ago, and I'm still a reader. Congrats, and keep up the good work!

January 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRobyn

Happy birthday, blog! One of those people who never comment. I don't remember how I found you, but it is so nice to read a blog that is both funny and irreverent. Also, your natural hair is just fabulous.

January 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

Embarrassingly, I found your blog through one of those "Top Mommy Bloggers" lists when I started blogging and have been reading for more than a year now. My own baby is going to be 2 soon - which makes me want to sob - but I got smart about it and had another one 5 weeks ago so now I'm too exhausted to be sad. AM GENIUS. Happy Bloggy Birthday!

January 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

I'm fairly new to your blog...within the past few months. I'm also a new mom (my boy, Jack, turned 6 months yesterday). I think I found your blog through another mommy-blog type thing. Not quite sure. I'm not a huge commenter, as I read my blogs through Google reader (I know, I know).
I've lived in all time zones of the contiguous US. I close my eyes when I brush my teeth. I have a full time job which I thought I'd want to continue after having Jack, but now having Jack makes me want hanging out with him to be my full time job.

Hello!

I rarrely comment and mostly read within my reader... so I'm doubly annoying. I do love reading your stuff though. I'm not sure how long I've been reading for but it may even be about 5 or 6 years. I think yours was one of the first blogs I started reading regularly.

A bit about me... I'm in my 30s. Currently living in England but originally from the North of Ireland. I used to keep a blog but got rid of it a while ago... I'm rubbish at updating. I love reading about other folk who live on the other side of the world to me. It makes me feel like a part of a worldwide community. I just wish I had the time to take part more fully. But I am always here reading and enjoying the connection!

Take care and happy Blog Birthday!

:) I'm one of those who really just about never comment. Sorry! I usually read you through my RSS feed, and so to comment, I have to click and...damn, I'm lazy. Ok, so anyway, I haven't been reading for 7 years, but in the time I have been reading, I've been enjoying your writing quite a bit. My favorite cheese is Colby, but it's near impossible to find without being mixed with Jack. So I like them both. I'm not too sure how I found this blog, possibly it was a recommendation by the google RSS?

Good Morning! I can't think of anything to interesting through my cold medicine fog of delight. Except my 20lbs cat is trying to sleep on the keyboard I'm typing on. Is that interesting on the internet? This right here is why I normally just read and don't comment. I blank under the pressure to be on topic/witty. Peace out mofos!
