Regarding your latest email
April 20, 2011I love my parents and related old-ish people. I do! I love that they're all, to a person, compelled to forward any email they receive that might be viewed as cute, funny, important, or all three. But then they get frustrated with me for not replying. If you're of the Greatest Generation and are wondering why I never respond to such emails, here's what it looks like on my end.

That is so true! Love the way you put it together, but it's not only the oldsters who do this...I have lots of friends who forward me junk and then write a half sentence at the top. As if I have time to read yet again about how special is "A Mother's Love." ugh! Also, I still get bogus Amber Alerts and urban legend emails from friends who really should know better -- just got one yesterday that I've received at least a dozen times before!
WHY IS MY MOM EMAILING YOU?
I am so hurt.
Seriously...it's cute when it comes from your family. But there is an older woman I work with. She is the sweetest person. But she sends this stuff EVERY day! I can't bear to tell her to stop emailing everyone.

I love this. Especially all the invented email addresses. "mygranddaughterconvincedmetoopenanelectronicmailaccount@hotmail.com" is totally genius.
My sweet MIL is a big forwarder type person. Of things that she usually takes very seriously and follows up about. When usually they are urban legends or cartoons that make me vaguely uncomfortable that they would make her think of me.
My extremely aggressive mother in law used to forward me emails involving saints and guardian angels (even though I am nominally Jewish) and I especially enjoyed receiving the ones which turned into a long powerpoint presentation. Particularly when a giant rainbow kitten flashed across my screen as my boss popped his head into my office.
YES! Thank you. My Aunt is the worst, they usual involve urban legends already covered in the Scream movies with stern warnings to be careful in parking garages and to make sure to look under the floor mats in your car and to tell ALL your female friends to do the same because even if just *ONE* woman is saved from rabid knife wielding ferrets posing as cops, we'll have done our job.
Just once I'll have enough guts to compile every single exposed email address that's been forwarded and reply all, my father did it once, with fantastic results.
Can I forward this to my Dad?
On second thought, if I do that he'll probably get upset at not being able to read the original original forwarded original message.

Awww, everyone, have a little empathy for those in the greatest generation with itchy forwarding fingers.
They're mostly retired, thus have a lot of time on their hands. The Internet is new enough for them that they use it more for entertainment and to, ahem, connect with family members than for work. They have no concept of how draining it can be to work in front of a computer for hours at a time, answering hundreds of emails a day.
Yay for those of who gently asked relatives not to forward things, or who have special addresses set up to channel these emails to. We'll all annoy the next generation(s) somehow. Let's hope we're treated kindly when we do so!
I am very blessed, because my 76-year old mother deletes all Forwards that come to her, with a "Why do people send me this crap?!" God, I love that woman.

Back in the day, when mailbox sizes were more limited, I had to ask two people to knock it off already with the pointless forwards because they were choking my inbox -- one was a contemporary of mine and one was a close friend of my parents.

I love love love this! Sadly, I get ones EXACTLY like this from my 80 something year old aunt. But, what makes it worse is that my 80 something Dad then forwards me the same email - you know the one my aunt sent to both of us and you can see my email in the "to" line.
